Though the reactions from Taiwan-based digital camera makers to Samsung’s recently released i7 digital camera, which has PMP (portable multimedia player) functions, has been mixed, most agree that the future inclusion of PMP functions into digital cameras depends on the top three digital camera brands of Sony, Canon and Nikon, according to industry sources.

The 7.2-megapixel DSC i7 features a 180-degree swivel LCD screen plus a built-in MP3/MPEG-4 player, according to Samsung Electronics Taiwan. The model will be launched in March first in North America and may be introduced to Taiwan in the second quarter, the company noted.

Leading Taiwanese makers of digital cameras supporting digital cameras with PMP functions think that there are neither technological barriers nor much additional production cost to include PMP functions and such products will cater to young consumers. However, other manufacturers say that PMP functions are power-intensive and will greatly reduce battery life of the device to only 3-4 hours of use.

The makers all agree, however, that a wider inclusion of PMP functionality in digital cameras will depend on the major brands such as Sony, Canon and Nikon designing such functions into their products.
