The Slacker service and player, dubbed as a “personal Internet radio,” is all the news all day today and yesterday. It’s not being sold as an PMP per se but it’s received praise for being “perhaps the best implementation of WiFi on a DAP/PMP to date.” Competitors for Slacker radio are LastFM and Pandora, but what sets Slacker apart is that it also offers its own iPod-size and iPod-killing player. The Slacker Portable Radio Player both connect to satellite and WiFi. It’s definitely a head above competitors because of this and at the same time poses a legitimate threat to the iPod as the unbiquitous music-playing device. The player is chock-full of functions and allows the user to personalize his music listening. The Slacker player with four-inch color screen is priced from $150 to $250 (based on storage capacity) and comes with the Slacker Jukebox software; while the radio service will cost $7.50 and is absolutely ad free. It will be available in the Summer. Slacker also plans to integrate other devices suchas cell phones with theirs in the future.
