Nokia N95 Video Recording Review

9 04 2007

The Nokia N95 has it all in one small pocketable box: cellphone, GPS navigation, 5 megapixel camera, WiFi, HSDPA (3.6Mbps), MP3 (the best feature of the N95 according to GigaOM) and on top of it, it’s a smartphone. One of the many high-end features that separates the N95 from its competitors, present or future (iPhone) is its video recording capability. The NSeries have always had the video-recording advantage, but now instead of 1.3 , 2.0 or 3.2 megapixels, you get a 5.0 megapixel Carl Zeiss optics, which captures 640 by 480 pixels VGA videos at 30fps. The Nokia N95’s video capture is so good, the only comparison in the mobile phone world, according to the reviewer at All About Symbian, is Nokia’s own N93.

The review: Besides the obvious - 5MP on the N95 against the 3.2MP of the N93 - users will miss the optical zoom of the N93 in the N95. Optical zoom gives you a true optical resolution as opposed to a digital zoom, which is the N95’s only given option. The mic in the N95 is of a lower quality but it benefits from something called automatic gain control, which means that the N95 adapts when recording with a lot of background noise, so unlike the N93, the N95 can totally handle rock concerts.

Conclusion: It’s not as good as high-end standalone camcorders, but it’s the best video recorder that you can actually have with you at all times.
