Nokia, Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks, Sony Ericsson, KPN, Digitenne, NXP Semiconductors, Sony Ericsson, Telefónica, O2 Europe, T-Mobile, Vodafone and ZTE have heeded the warning of European Commission Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reading and endorsed a common Mobile TV implementation profile developed within the Broadcast Mobile Convergence Forum (bmcoforum). This profile is a simplified Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Mobile Broadcast Services Enabler Suite (BCAST) specification for fast implementations ensuring interoperability and future proofing further.

The profile will not be endorsing one Mobile TV standard but will support both DVB-H broadcast networks and cellular systems and 3G Mobile Broadcast Service (MBMS). This is expected to be a speedier approach in mobile TV deployments in Europe. The profile will have three main features:

1. Advanced service and program guide (ESG) enabling a rich set of services
2. Support for multiple broadcast technologies
3. Support for content and service protection, using the Smart Card Profile (based on (U)SIM Card) or the DRM Profile (based on OMA DRM V2.0)

Jouni Kämäräinen, Director, Multimedia, Nokia observed that there is a strong similarity between this common implementation profile and the early days of GSM.
