Google has become the top ranking brand passing rivals Microsoft and Yahoo! according to market research firm Millward Brown in a report they published to Financial Times. It wasn’t just its technology rivals Google beat, even General Electric (GE) has to play second fiddle to the search engine giant. Microsoft is number 3 while Coca-Cola takes fourth place. Computer giant IMB takes 9th place. The worldwide ranking took data from about one million consumers. Only one year ago, Google ranked 7th. Apple and Starbucks moved thirteen spots, with Apple making it to number 16. China Mobile also took big steps in brand recognition getting the number 5 spot. Key factors in companies improving their brand recognition is through corporate responsibility and expansion in emerging markets like China and India. It should also be noted that Google used minimal advertising with most of its popularity derived from word of mouth.
