AT&T Cingular may get the entire Apple iPhone pie in the United States, it is rival T-Mobile who is the leading candidate to garner the exclusive European rights. The iPhone is a GSM device. Potentially it has a larger market reach in Europe, which is predominantly GSM. CDMA is the predominant airlink in the United States. Vodafone, Orange and Telefonica (owner of O2) have also been competing for the rights to distribute the iPhone. Vodafone and T-Mobile have become the top two frontrunner although there are some who think that Deutsche Telekom is also still in contention.
T-Mobile’s strong point is in music, which it has been very active in; meanwhile Vodafone’s Live! portal is seen as possibly conflicting with iPhone’s iTunes. Martin Gutberlet, research director of Gartner, thinks that iPhone has a lot to lose by adopting wireless exclusivity in Europe, which is a far more fragmented market compared to the U.S. The frontrunner, T-Mobile, for example, have pretty much neglected such important markets as Italy, Spain or France.

Hi
June 29th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
I work in t-mobile retail and alot of evidence is pointing at it being the network.
-T-mobile offers WI-FI hotspots in the UK and Europe vs Vodafone 0
-T-mobile offers mobile internet 3GB/months while Vodafone 120mb/month, both at £7.50
-Vodafone love putting as many lock software on their mobiles, especailly Vodafone live, while Iphone will be apple’s softwear
-Vodafone usaully like a higher level of control of their stock, whereby apple wants to control stock and distrubition
-Voda love subsidisations and is usally the cheapest phone prices, and would love the ideas of Free phone on there highest traffics. Apple want the prices caped regsardless on tarrif.
-T-mobile are having a staff push from mid august to end september
However dispite this alot of third party uk mobile retails have suggested O2 and vodafone will be the supplies. However this is hype and no validity.

Like CHO said.. T-Mobile is Deutsche Telekom.
T-Mobile is the wireless part of Deutsche Telekom.
Saying T-Mobile is a front runner, and Deutsche Telekom is still in contention, shows the author is clueless.
