iSuppli says that flash memory will be in 65% of portable media players worldwide. This is a sudden change of climate. Until now HDD or hard disk drives have dominated the market. In fact, only last year HDDs account for 78$ of built-in storage in PMPs sold worldwide. “NAND flash costs are nearing a point where makers of MP3 music players can add enough capacity to support video content, which requires significantly more storage than audio,” says iSuppli senior analyst Chris Crotty. Costs of NAND flash memory will be declining 47.1 % every year. In 2008, iSuppli predicts that 96 million PMPs with flash storage will be shipped compared to 32.1 million HDD-based PMPs.
HDDs are less expensive compared to NAND flash but they consume more power and take up more space. HDD-based devices suffer from more mechanical failure. iSuppli also predicts that Apple will be releasing flash-based iPod after the iPhone comes out.
