Those who like using Nand flash memory to extend their PMPs onboard storage will have to go deeper into their pockets throughout the rest of the year and possibly beyond it. Flash memory is now the storage of choice in the PMP market and with the current release of the iPhone and a new flash-based iPod coming, manufacturers of flash memory will be put under immense pressure to keep up with the demands. This means price increases. Apple has not announced whether the new iPod will indeed be flash-based, but most analysts expect it and predict it will have a touchscreen interface with WiFi music downloads. The bottomline is that though the iPhone is expected to sell just below 5 million units this year alone, it will be the new iPod that will tip the pricing scale for the Nand flash, according to DRAMeXchange Technology Inc. Apple easily takes up a quarter of the market demand for flash memory with the iPhone and the new iPod included.
