XCUTE DV2 (Phone, Digital Camera, PMP): Mother of All Convergence Devices

The XCUTE DV2 is possibly the mother of all convergence devices. It’s no Chinese hack job. Rather, it’s Taiwan manufactured, the same Taiwan where they’re mass producing the iPhone. Not to mention the DV2 is second-generation, successor of (for all intents and purposes) the successful DV1. The DV2 was introduced as early as two years ago to minimal fanfare. This is typical of products from unknown semi-Chinese brands. But, guys, this phone actually works like it should. Its longevity on the retail side (it’s been out two years) should be proof enough of the soundness of the device.
The design, as GMP3 notes, is derivative of Sanyo Xacti, but while Xacti is just a digital camera, the DV2 is also a triband (900/1800/1900) GSM/GPRS phone with WAP 2.0. It supports SMS, MMS and EMS (enhanced messaging service, i.e. icons, bold texts and other formatting). It has an external and internal screen, the latter being a 2-inch 640 x 240-pixel, 16.7-milion, 24-bits LTPS TFT. Good for playing AVI, MOV, and ASF videos. The 6 megapixel CMOS camera is the highest pixel count on any phone we’ve covered so far. It has a 4x optical (?) zoom with integrated flash. It has 22 shooting modes and shoots in VGA resolution at 30fps in these following formats: AVI, ASF, MOV, JEP. Other features include MP3 playback, TV out, USB, miniSD extension. This phone/camcorder/PMP is also JAVA enabled, so besides MMS, EMS and a 6 MP camera, the DV2 has a fourth feature that iPhone doesn’t have. All of this in a neat 99g package.
I’m not joking (continue reading for a DV2 camera footage): XCUTE’s DV2 is a serious multi-functional device with serious capabilities and only a semi-serious retail price of $412 US.
