The European Union is set to announce a single mobile TV standard. Already the dominant standr in Europe, DVB-H is expected to take the honor. There have been some opposition especially from those who want market forces to determine the direction of mobile TV, but Viviane Reading of the European Commission Telecoms have been pushing for a common EU technology for mobile TV and will finally announce which standard will be implemented. Besides being the most widely used standard, DVB-H has the support of industry power players like Nokia and Motorola. U.K. leads the opposition to DVB-H with Virgin supporting DMB, while T-Mobile, O2 and Vodafone are expected to be on the DVB-H bandwagon. DMB is the leading technology in many parts of Asia, including Korea.
The squabbling European powers might do well to seek out alternatives like this dual-mode tuner from Sharp or, better yet, this universal tuner from Samsung.
