Sophia Mobile of Japan startled the wireless world when it came out with a press photo of its 4.3-inch touchscreen phone dubbed “Nani.” Our first look is of a white Sophia Nani, a subliminal message that it is meant to be an iPhone-killer when it comes out. Now thanks to Akihabaranews, we have more specs of the Sophia Nani to compare with the iPhone: Windows Mobile 6, PDA functionality, WiFi b and g, USB on-the-go (OTG), W-SIM (AirH), PMP functionality (Mpeg1/2/4, WMV9, DivX, Xvid), MP3 player (WAV, WMA, MP3 and OGG), mobile TV, GPS. Most importantly, the dimensions and weight: 140 x 80.5 x 17mm at 180g. It’s a little too long and a little too wide even for a PDA nowadays.
Another intersting feature is the use of the AirH W-SIM, which doesn’t only store your information but contains the transmission technology, a sort of super SIM. This means you can use the W-SIM in your Sophia Nani to make calls from any portable device with a mic. Now, this is just my opinion but the way this device is built, its inherent bulkiness, the W-SIM and PDA backbone doesn’t spell iPhone killer or iPhone rival to me.
Sample of the 800 x 400-pixel screen resolution after the break.

Anyone who thinks this rivals the iPhone doesn’t get it. This uses normal Windows - I mean, look at the standard Windows interface! The whole point of the iPhone is that the standard computer interface of menus, etc. doesn’t work on a small device.

Standard menus work for a business PDA, where you need lots of choices.
Trying to shoehorn a large-finger-based interface into every situation is not practical. For example, personal computers need a mouse for more accurate control and to not cover up your work with your hand.
Sometimes even a stylus is the right interface. (Think artists, FedEx with signatures, construction note takers, etc.)
But agreed, comparing everything to the iPhone is just silly and is for the purpose of attention getting.

PS. That is clearly NOT repeat NOT Windows Mobile. It is Windows CE.
You can tell the difference because CE’s native UI (you can write your own overlay, of course) has the Start menu, desktop icons, etc.
Windows CE also comes with Internet Explorer 6.0, not the simpler Windows Mobile browser.
