Archos, Gadget Review

French PMP maker Archos has strongly improved their PMP lineup when they launched Gen5 beginning with the 605 WiFi, and who better to review it than GenerationMP3. First off, GMP3 confirms that the new device is a true evolution from the Archos 604. One downside is the start up, which takes the 605 a full half minute or ten seconds longer than its predecessor. Meanwhile, the form factor is less brick-like, though the slimming isn’t totally effected due to the WiFi antenna. Navigation has become truly intuitive (Archos is one manufacturer who understands the importance of a pristine screen), which is why the tactile buttons have been retained despite the touchscreen and we can expect them in future Archos PMPs.

Archos concentrates on improving the video quality from the 604 but this does not mean audio cannot be improved a notch. With encoding, the Archos can play most any video file format. The menu is easy to use and lets you relax choosing what to watch next. The 605 supports subtitles (yipee!) and a plug-in for high-definition may come soon. You need a DVR station to record. No need to buy a new one for the 605 if you already own a DVR from your older 604. Read more…
