If you’re planning to get yourself an iPod, you might want to wait til you hear more news about how Apple intends to make a thief-deterrant for iPods. While the shmuck might still get away with your iPod no matter how much you try to defend it, he or she is going to get a small nasty surprise. Apple recently patented a new application of protective circuitry that will not allow iPods to be charged by a charger or a PC that isn’t an authorized type. And it’s not like iPod thieves can just go out and buy authorized-type chargers. If you plug your iPod into an unauthorized computer, it won’t charge unless the internal “guardian” circuit matches the code with the code embedded on the PC software. Apple is already making use of a similar technology that “pairs” iPods to an iTunes that runs on a specific Mac or PC. If the codes don’t match, the guardian circuit could be triggered to prevent any further charging. Stay tuned for further updates on this!

But what happens if the actual owner is away on a holiday and is forced to use an Internet Cafe or even a friend’s house?
