Google May Not Like 700MHz With No “Open Services,” “Open Networks”

Remember that 700MHz spectrum Google wants to buy from the FCC for a whopping $4.6 billion? (assuming Google’s 4 conditions are met)? Well, Google could have it and the FCC has agreed on two of the four conditions: Google will have open devices and it will have open applications. But without open networks and without the bandwidth being available for wholesale Google will not be interested in owning the spectrum, not for the amount of money it’s willing to pay. Wireless carriers, who don’t want anything this “open” for consumers, can breathe a sigh of relief. The FCC is watching over the American public. As Kevin Martin puts it : “The public interest is not what any company wants.”
