On Tuesday, Dell announced that they had purchased mobile entertainment software provider Zing. There’s no news on what the terms of the deal are, but Zing is reported to have gotten an additional $13 million in funding early this year.

Many speculate that the move was due to Dell’s intention to establish themselves as a player in the portable media player market and create Dell branded PMPs. It’s easy to see why Dell acquired Zing since early this year, the latter partnered with FON so Zing customers can use FON hotspots for free. This means that Dell can introduce a WiFi enabled PMP to the market sometime in the future. Aside from this, Zing also made a deal with Sirius Satellite Radio, which allows their programs to be streamed to Zing gadgets.
