The Nokia N800 internet tablet will have the honor of being the first device to run on Sprint’s WiMAX network. WiMAX is short for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, based on IEEE 802.16 standard, also called WirelessMAN. The purpose is to provide wireless connectivity throughout long distances using point-to-point and cellular access with WiFi and high-speed cellular networks. This is 4G territory with deliverable speeds of 10 Mbit/s at 10 km. In short, it’s a classy way of getting high-speed data linkage on a portable device. It’ll also give new life to the rather Nokia’s only and struggling (market-wise) Nseries device without cellular connection.
