Official: iPod Touch is a Slim iPhone
5 09 2007It doesn’t make calls, but the iPod Touch, Apple’s new flagship player, will be boasting an iPhone-like 3.5-inch widescreen. It’s got iPhone’s flick-through touch interface and similar locking command (slide to unlock). It has WiFi and includes a slightly noticeable WiFi antenna (see pic below). You can surf the Net (go play YouTube videos, if you wish) and get the un-watered down version of the Web. It’s only 8mm thick! It comes in 8GB and 16GB versions for $299 and $399, which ain’t bad at all.
Update: Why iPod Touch and not iTouch?
Why Apple went with iPod Touch (see HTC Touch) and not iTouch, avoiding trademark problems with Pasen’s iTouch and courting a more formidable opponent like HTC is another strain of curious. Curiosly, Yahoo! News (and Reuters) had iTouch instead of iPod Touch.

They are already suing our company for the Pasen iTouch breaking their Community Registered Design 748314-0001,but we have proof of it being on the market before they registered their design, therefore their design rights don’t apply on us.

disturbing video differences (thanks for the heads up, btw), and legal problems with the name aside, others note the ipod touch name may signal that this new device is destined to be a glorified media player and not pda. given name ipod touch versus just itouch, may signal where this device is headed. however, i for one want full functionality for its calendar, and extras like maps, notes, and speakers.
perhaps mr. jobs is losing touch with what buyers will constitute as techie objects of desire and knowing the difference between what is nice to have versus what they must have. designing gossamer (thanks to merlin mann for the descriptive) is one thing; making it work is another. and understanding how the internet works for or against a product is important too. little by little the foibles of this new device are escaping into the wild. what’s that? is that the sound of canceled and abandoned orders?
