Some vacationing iPhone users are getting billed a fortune for their data usage on their iPhones. Apple is still a toddler in the handset industry and AT&T isn’t exactly being a good mentor. Jay Levy, who lives in Hewlet Harbor racked up $4,800 in data charges from AT&T for overseas email updates that they didn’t know they had to pay for, but, apparently, they did because AT&T sent them the bill. The family of three owned three iPhones and nine email accounts. Their short Mediterranean Cruise just cost them a little more than they had expected. They are not alone. Herbert Kliegerman, a sixty-eight-year-old real-estate agent from the New York was billed $2,000 while visiting Mexico. He said the Apple iPhone rate plans indicated “unlimited data” for e-mail and Web usage. There was no asterisk or any indication that this would change once he crosses the border. Of course, to avoid any surprises you can always read the fine print like Justine.

I was billed $13,280 for charges I never accepted out of the country and they shut my lines off. A month later $4,850 for another out of country trip. Lawsuit anyone?
