Apple is interested in becoming a wireless provier. Like Google, Apple will be bidding for the 700Mhz spectrum that will be auctioned off by the FCC in January of next year. The spectrum has been pegged at $4.6 billion but go go up to $9 billion. The 700Mhz spectrum is prime property in terms of wireless real estate as it could deliver fdata in speeds that is comparable to WiFi. The 700Mhz spectrum was previously occupied by analog TV. Since TV is legally required to move to digital, the 700Mhz spectrum is now available for the highest bidder. Google’s bid made two things clear for potential buyers of the spectrum: 700Mhz should be partially opened to competing devices and it should also be open to other applications. What this means to Apple’s deal with AT&T is unknown. The auction of the 700Mhz band will take place on January 16, 2008
