Early this afternoon, the iPhone Dev Team released the iUnlock, the first free, open-source iPhone SIM unlock application.  This system, however, is a little more complicated than the iPhoneSIMfree but it definitely works.  To pull it off, you’re going to need iUnlock + nor + the .fls file. These can be found in ZIP files all over the internet.

Here’s how you do it:

  •  Make sure your iPhone is upgraded to firmware version 1.02.
  • Install the setup and software.  Download and extract all the neccessary files to a directory on your computer.  After that, you need to manually upload files and executables to your phone.
  •  Perform the unlock by logging onto your phone via SSH from your computer. This task can be performed by using an application called PuTTY (or any other similar SSH client).
  • Put in any SIM card and make a call to test if it works!

More detailed instructions are available at the unofficial iUnlock guide.  Personally, I prefer the iPhoneSIMfree method as the instructions are easier to follow and are a lot less complicated.
