At Japan’s CEATEC exhibit, Toshiba revealed a PMP prototype that uses fuel cells to give long-lasting battery life. While other features such as supported file formats weren’t mentioned, we know that the product has a built-in 1seg tuner and can reportedly do TV playback for about 10 hours. The company expects to have models based on this prototype out sometime next year.

In the past, Toshiba has shown a few non-commercial PMPs and DAPs equipped with fuel cells that use nearly 100 percent methanol. This time though, the player block and the fuel-cell block are integrated. The CO2 vapor byproduct is also allowed to disperse naturally instead of being channeled through an outlet.

Click through to see the PMP’s backside, which shows the fuel cell’s air electrodes (the orange arrow lets you know what to look at).
