The Mirror estimates Apple has sold 70,000 iPhones on its first weekend. They calculated that since its launch the iPhone has sold at a “a rate of 4.2 per second at the height of the frenzy at 1,300 outlets,” which translates to 70k so far. In Britain, you can buy the iPhone in three places: Apple Store, O2 stores and Carphone Warehouse stores but none of these companies are will to divulge results. If the absence of long lines just before launch is any indication, iPhone UK is not nearly as successful as iPhone US.

Actually it looks like the iPhone is selling very well in the UK. Poms with their stiff upper lip just don’t indulge in queue theatrics (though there were thousands at the Regent Apple store and hundreds at Manchester etc).
“Peter Erskine, chief executive of O2, told the Evening Standard that the Apple iPhone has been “the fastest selling device we have ever seen. It sold in the tens of thousands but not as many as 100,000″.

And Apple hasn’t yet released their figures as to how many were sold from their handful of UK Apple Stores or via the online Apple Store.
That doesn’t sound like a flop to me and is already on par with the response in the USA considering the UK is 1/5th the population.
In the USA, Apple sold 270k in 30 hours, or 180k in 24 hours. http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/07/25/appleearnings/index.php so to match the US per capita, O2 would have had to have sold around 36,000.

I’m afraid to disappoint you, but it looks like the iPhone is selling very well in the UK. It’s just that Poms with their stiff upper lips don’t indulge in queue theatrics.

I’m afraid to disappoint you, but length of queue is a very poor metric to use.. It looks like the iPhone is selling very well in the UK.
