Six prominent tech reviewers have given their opinion on Microsoft’s second-generation PMP player. Their conclusions is a coup for the Microsoft team. They voted for the 80GB hard-disk Zune player over the iPod Classic and one of them even pointed out the superior experience of buying songs on Zune Marketplace compared to iTunes. The Zune pad, video playback and screen size were also lauded, but Marketplace, wireless syncing and everything to do with the Zune software got top honors.
Wired - Would I recommend the Zune? Yeah, I think I would. If you’re not invested in the iPod/iTunes ecosystem, it’s the most polished competitor I’ve used to date. Especially if you’re looking for a subscription service, the integration of player and service just crushes everyone else.
CNET - Up until now there have ever really been any good competitors to the iPod as far as tight integration for audio and video podcast.
PCMAG - We’ll just come out and say it: The 80GB Zune trumps the iPod Classic.
YahooTech - Overall, I thought wireless syncing worked pretty seamlessly, and I loved being able to sync new songs and playlists over the air (why can’t the iPhone or the iPod Touch do this?)
PCWorld - Microsoft’s spent a lot of time rethinking the social aspects of the Zune player, removing several restrictions, on how you can share tracks between Zune players, and adding an online community called the Zune Social.
Dean Takahashi - The Zune Marketplace website looks better than iTunes because it feels less like a spreadsheet. It still uses the MTV Urge back-end but is completely redesigned.
