Amazon launched their Kindle E-book reader at an NYC hotel today and this device is so full of useful features, I don’t know where to begin! It’s got a soft rubber back for a comfortable hold and a full-page turning, paper-like display so it feels like you’re holding and reading an actual book. There’s a dictionary in every Kindle so you don’t have to fumble for one every time you encounter an unfamiliar word. You can also change the font size, highlight important parts, and make annotations.
The Kindle is powered by Sprint’s EV-DO network, and there’s no data plan, no multiyear contract, and no monthly bill. Amazon takes care of all of that so you can shop and read at your convenience. Yep, that’s right–shop. You can purchase e-books on Amazon using the Kindle. It displays the national bestseller list as well as recommended books, and if you purchase one by accident it’s easy to cancel the order. Want a newspaper? You can also download the WSJ, New York Times, Washington Post, local newspapers, and other publications like Time and Fortune while you sleep. And no, this isn’t an RSS feed–you subscribe to the publications you’d like to read.
I’m a little bit old-fashioned and I’d buy real books over E-books anyday, but I have to admit that the Kindle makes me want to convert to their digital formats. Imagine, shopping for E-books without having to leave my comfy reading chair to get on my PC! Techie bookworms on the go, the Kindle is made especially for you.
