CES has held a river of surprises for iRiver watchers, and the surprise keeps on flowing. Remember the one-eyed touchscreen PMP we announced late last year? The W10 is one well-connected PMP but apparently it wasn’t enough for iRiver, adding GSM cellular connectivity to the touchscreen WiFi-enabled device. It has 3 inches of screen space with 480 x 272-pixel resolution. On board is a 2 megapixel camera, GPS and DMB TV tuner. The OS is Linux, a departure from the Windows CE 5.0 of the W10. The user interface actually holds up pretty well with the iPhone user interface, and the best part is that this could be a 3G phone yet. I wonder if it will also support Skyhook and AOL XM radio like the W10. You get an on board 4GB of storage.

[...] Auf der heute endenden Consumer Electronics Show (CES) werden seit dem 7. Januar sämtliche Innovationen aus der Welt der Unterhaltungselektronik präsentiert. Der Hersteller iRiver nutzte die in Las Vegas stattfindende Veranstaltung um das Resultat seiner jüngsten Versuche, Fuß auf dem Mobilfunkmarkt zu fassen, darzubieten: Es ist ein iPhone! Falsch: ein ‘iRiver GSM Phone’! Das Gadget, das dem Apple Kontrahenten verblüffend ähnelt ist mit einem 3 Zoll großen Touchscreen mit 480×272 Pixeln Auflösung und nur einem physischen Bedienelement ausgestattet. Auch die Benutzeroberfläche wäre für iPhone-Besitzer wohl kein Problem, denn genau wie auf dem ‘Smartphone der Superlative’ sind alle Features in Form von kleinen Icons auf der Oberfläche angeordnet. Als Betriebssystem hat iRiver eine Windows CE 5.0 abgewandelte Linux-Version installiert. Leider gibt es bisher noch keine eindeutigen Angaben über die weiteren technischen Details. Als Sicher gilt eine 2 Megapixel Handykamera mit Videofunktion, einen Adobe Flash Player, FM Tuner und der Datendownload wird voraussichtlich dank GSM Standard in HSDPA Geschwindigkeit möglich sein. Über integriertes GPS, WLAN oder Handy-TV Fähigkeiten ist hingegen bisher nichts bekannt. Preislich wird das Gerät wohl deutlich niedriger als das iPhone angesiedelt sein – irgendwie muss sich das Gadget ja schließlich auch vom Big Brother – Wunderphone unterscheiden…Bildquelle: PMP Today [...]

Not bad, but wouldn’t a netbook be better? People don’t want more screen space and heavier phones. If anything, the trend will be back to smaller phones and larger internet devices like umpc’s and netbooks.
