LG Prada Silver to Take on iPhone

13 01 2008

LG has only sold 700,000 units of the Prada Phone since its release world wide, a far cry from iPhone’s 5 million. Maybe a silver LG Prada will make more headway in beating Apple’s Phone. At least, that’s what LG is hoping. It’s pretty much the same phone except for the color - 3-inch touch-screen display, 2.0 megapixel camera, Bluetooth and a Prada-designed interface (color-wise). Perhaps DMB TV to be added eventually.

Update: the LG site reveals an updated interface on the LG Prada, which now features a virtual QWERTY, not just a T9 pad.

LG doesn’t have a legion of cultists ready to buy anything Apple makes,so it’s much harder for them.

Even with iphone’s shortcomings of proprietary battery, no external media, locked down applications(at least for now), carrier locks it’s usability far and away exceeds both the LG and any touch screen unit. I don’t have one (as I prefer the extensibility of my Nokia n800) but for the average user, they love the iphone. Recently on a Christmas cruise, conversation came to vacations photos and my friend took out his iphone to show me his latest shots, flipping through them in a matter of seconds. Fumbling away, I had to press 10 keys just to get the photos to load on my n800 (not to mention the effort to get them on the memory card to start with)… who cares about features in the end, it’s all about how functional it is. The LG is no different to any other normal smartphone hence it can’t beat the iphone.

I’ve just looked at the LG Viewty at the store the other day. Magbificent-looking gadget. definitely worth its $620 price tag. It didn;t have WiFi, which is a curious decision for LG. None of its phones have WiFi. If the Viewty did have WiFi, I am sure to get myself one.
