We’ve noted the possible relationship between the use of iPods and pacemakers skipping a beat. But besides an amateur study on the matter, we have no official word about possible health complications when an iPod goes near a patient with a pacemaker. That is, until now. The U.S. FDA has published their findings o iPod vs. pacemaker and they have concluded that the Apple MP3 player does not interfere with the functioning of cardiac pacemakers. They tested four iPods including the video iPod and the shuffle. The Nano they tested is presumably the non-video, non-phat Nano.
Howard Bassen and his team found out that even at very close range, the iPod only produces a “peak magnetic field strength was 0.2 millionths of a Tesla” or hundreds of times below levels that would affect pacemakers.
