Nokia Maps is closing in on a second-generation version. The beta version is available to a few testers. Allaboutsymbian has the lowdown on the improvements:

  • Walk pedestrian mode using breadcrumbs. There is no voice instructions. This can be purchased on its own and is also available pre-loaded in the driving navigation license.
  • Drive or driving navigation has been significantly improved. Now it has transparent panels and helpful driving indicators compared to the first version.
  • Satellite maps for 200 cities can now be downloaded over the air and automatically saved for the next time you open up the application. Nokia Maps is closing in on Google Maps. Nokia has included a hybrid view of the satellite view and the normal view.
  • Real time traffic routing with dynamic rerouting. This is only an add-on though and only 18 countries i Europe are included.
  • Search function result has categories: i.e. streets, towns , restaurants.
  • Improved “landmarks” function. You can save places as favorites in a folder.
  • Navigation licenses and Maps can be upgraded to newer formats. New version of MapLoader utility
  • Videos available in several expanded city guides

Looks like Nokia Maps is heading in the right direction.

Nokia Maps rocks, but the Nokia Map loader sucks.

Nokia Map Loader alternative: http://nokiamaps.moo.no . Works on any operating system with any browser. No need to install anything, so you can add maps on locked-down computers like at work, in school, internet cafes, or straight from your phones built-in browser.
