The iPhone hype machine has begun rumbling anew and this time it’s finally about 3G connectivity. Now, we’re quite sure iPhone will have 3G this year, but some people just couldn’t wait. With 3G one can surf the Web at near broadband speeds away from a WiFi hotspot. No more snail-paced EDGE. With 3G, Apple will also get to enjoy higher user fees from AT&T. Apple gets a cut every time AT&T charges an iPhone user a fee and 3G connectivity means higher fees from user. Make no mistake, Apple is just as excited about putting 3G on their phone as we are, but it’s taking them this long to resolve the battery drain issues that come with 3G. One possible solution is using an OLED screen instead of LCD. OLED is not only thinner, it’s also more energy efficient. OLED screens have been popular now for some time especially with Chinese manufacturers, so we’re not talking about cutting edge here. So, hopefully, in the Summer we will have the longest lasting cellphone battery on a 3G phone.
