PMP Today has had its share of complainers wanting to know why big manufacturers don’t support .ogg enough. Ogg Vorbis is an unrestricted format, you see, and maybe manufacturers are shy about using an unlicensed format. Oh, what a world that would be for music distributors and music player manufacturers alike. Samsung’s new YP-U4 DAP bravely support .ogg aside from WMA and MP3. The 1-inch OLED screen should be useful enough to navigate your music files. Included in the specs is Samsung’s DNSe 2.0 engine and a USB connector. It’s available in 1GB and 2GB versions.

Hi, I have technical comment to this announcement.

Ogg is only a container format. You should rather write that the player supports Ogg Vorbis, because Vorbis is the actual audio compression. It’s like MP4/AAC - MP4 is container format and AAC is audio compression. And just like MP4 can contain other audio compressions then AAC (MP2, MP3) or even video (MPEG-1/2/4), Ogg can contain other audio compressions (flac, Speex) too as well as video (Theora, Dirac).

So saying only Ogg is very inaccurate. At the same time the terminology around Ogg is not more or less difficult compared to MP4 or ASF (WMA).

Btw. Samsung is the only company from the big electronics manufacturers which supports Ogg Vorbis in their players. I’m also wondering what keeps the other manufacturers away from this great format. They don’t have to pay any license fees unlike all other lossy audio compressions.

Sandisk recently announced support for Ogg Vorbis and FLAC on the Sansa Clip and Fuze players. In fact, the Clip already supports Ogg Vorbis in the latest FW.

BTW, the Clip also crushes all other players in the super small form factor segment. I’m sure the new Sammy will be good, but it will cost twice as much as the Clip and won’t sound as good.

    For your information:
TrekStor have supported OGG Vorbis for at least 5 years (when I bought my first i.Beat Organix).
Since it’s free, I really don’t understand the reluctance of industry to support it. Any manufacturer can just download and use the supplied decoders from the OGG website…
