Prior to firmware 2.0, the Simplify Media app used to be exclusively available to jailbroken iPhones and iPod Touches. It’s a good thing though that now, it’s also available in the App Store as well. It’s still free of charge, and they’ve added some features that might make this version a little bit more enticing than its predecessor.
More after the break.
When playing a song, you’ll notice that there are additional buttons at the top, right corner of the screen labeled song, artist and lyrics. The song button needs no explanation as it pertains to the current file playing. The artist feature provides information about the artist depending on the available data in Last.fm, the apps content provider. The lyrics button will offer you lyrics to the song playing as provided by LyricWiki. These are cool additions to the program, but do take note that it is not perfect and is highly dependent on third-party services.
The album art feature, sad to say, also changed. In the past, the app would simply display whatever album art I had linked to the file, but now, it connects to an online database and displays whatever album art it deems appropriate for the song. Yeah, the intentions are good, but the chances of it using a wrong album art are really high especially if the file is not labeled correctly as such was the case in most of the songs I have in my collection.
Other than those I mentioned, its still pretty much the same. You still need to install a version on your desktop/laptop to gain access to your iTunes library, and you still can’t stream video files through it.
Over all, it’s a pretty decent app and so far, it’s the only one of its kind that’ll allow you to stream music from your iTunes library straight to your iPod Touch/iPhone. It’s still not perfect, but it’s a good improvement.
