Not many probably know that aside from their popular Eee PC line, Asus also has a mobile phone division. Well, Asus is letting everyone know that it exists with the announcement of the P552w. It may not look as sharp as the iPhone or the HTC Diamond, but it sure does look like a decent touchscreen-enabled alternative. the P552w comes with a fast 624MHz CPU, 128MB DDR, 2.8-inch 240×320 QVGA display, HSDPA/UMTS, WiFi b/g, GPS, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, 256 flash memory, support for microSD/SDHC cards, and runs on Windows Mobile.

While the specs and appearance may not provide that wow-factor, the touch-based Gester technology is something to look forward to. It works by recognizing the slides, pinches and flicks of your finger similar to HTC’s TouchFlo. There’s also proprietary software called EziPhoto and EziMusic which will take full advantage of the UI. Asus also claims that the P552w will have seamless Google integration as well. A lot of promising features, but sad to say, neither a price nor release date was mentioned.
It might lack all the visual aesthetics its other touchscreen-enabled counterparts have, but it sure tries to make up for it in its software and features. It’s also a nice change for once that we’re talking about an Asus phone rather than the usual Asus netbook.
