Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone coming to Russia on Dec. 5 for $600

Phone

Here are some good news and bad news regarding the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic touchscreen phone. It’s finally going on sale first in Russia on December 5 with Ukraine being blessed with the Nokia 5800 later that month and Kazakhstan in January. That’s the good part. The bad news is that it has a rumored price of 16,000 rubles or 457 Euros/$600 which is way more expensive than the €279 ($392) cost that was mentioned when it was finally unveiled. That’s one promise down the drain, but it doesn’t end just there. If you can remember, they also mentioned that it will debut in 7 countries in 2008, but apparently, with this latest development, that has just been trimmed down to just 2. I wonder what other surprises Nokia and the 5800 XpressMusic phone have in store for us in the future. I guess if something really sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Good for you titooo if they stay true to their word, but for now, we’re not counting on press releases and statements as the final truth until we see the 5800 XpressMusic phone finally released with a reasonable price attached to it.

These companies always do this stuff. I think they shoot themselves in the foot though. First rule of marketing: underpromise and overdeliver. By hyping the Nokia 5800 and promising things they could not deliver, they just look bad in the eyes of the consumer. They should have projected a higher price, then come at much lower and the perceived value would be much better to the end-user. A lot of marketing is simply perception. By the time Nokia gets their act together, there will be 10 more models that are as good or better than the 5800. I would say however that if sales are very good in Russia, then they can plan on having good sales throughout the rest of the world, barring any unforeseen glitches in their rollout.
