It certainly took Palm quite a while, but now they’re ready to join the multi-touch segment of the market with the Palm Pre smartphone. The Palm Pre comes with a 3.1-inch touchscreen display, 3-megapixel camera, slide-out QWERTY keypad, HSDPA, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and EDR, WiFi, GPS, proximity and light sensor, accelerometer, and 8GB of internal memory. It also features Palm’s latest OS, webOS. It’s a web-centric multi-touch platform that makes us of CSS, XHTML and Javacript making it accessible and compatible with a wide range of applications. No exact release date and pricing were mentioned, but it is expected to become available before the first half of 2009 comes to a close in the US via Sprint. An international release will follow thereafter.
While the new OS will undoubtedly play a big role in the success or failure of the Palm Pre, the hardware is all we’ve got to work on right now, and based on what we can see, it looks like Palm has done a pretty decent job in creating their first multi-touch device. It’s not outstanding, but a nice change of pace from the usual touchscreen phones we’ve seen of late.
