SciPhone Dream G2 Video Review

Tue, Feb 17, 2009

Google Android, Mobile Phone, sciphone

I know not many of you have forgotten the Sciphone Dream G2 with the fake Google Android OS. SciPhone is on eheck of a gutsy brand faking Android. Will they get away with it? More importantly, does fake Android approach the goodness of the real Android? Our friends at MP4 Nation has a hands-on review of the SciPhone Dream G2 with speciall attention to the Android knock-off.

Conclusion: the fake Android OS looks like Android without the features of Android. It’s pure aesthetics without the usability of the open mobile OS developed by Google. Curiosly, SciPhone even faked the megapixel count of the 4 MP camera built into the Dream G2. Just about a 2 MP, really. No WiFi, no Android, some Java apps, Bluetooth, Opera Mini, GSM/GPRS only mediocre video playback, has album art… Price is $165.

The big question with this phone is why they would not use the opensource android? I’ve been looking all over to find out why and havent found any info. Just a bad idea i guess

I just bought the one with wi-fi, i mean the wi-fi alone is worth 100bucks to me

Because this phone is made with the MTK6235 chip and it may not fully support Android. Just a guess.

The reason that sciphone is not using “free, open source Android” is that it is NOT free to implement it on your hardware. You have to rewrite all your drivers (wifi , USB , Video, audio, camera, cell transmitter, cell receiver, GPS, gravity sensors, low-power mode…. need I go on?). You also have to re-wite your UI and poperational logic. Then you have to test this rigorously before you can release it.

Sciphone already has well-tested and stable existing code. It would be a poor business decision to stop everythig because the mighty google suddenly shipped Android. Who knows if it wil succeed against Mobile Windows? Sciphone did waht any sensible clone business would do, the cloned the obvious shit (the UI) for the dumb-ass masses and shift product. It will be a while, I guess, before you see anything non-Sciphone from them - Android stil has to prove itself.

If you had a perfectly adequate house and someone came along and tells you that they will give you a fancy new house FREE, but it is just a pile of pre-cut boards in a lumber yard, would you burn down your house, just to get it?

THAT is why Sciphone is not using “free, open source Android”. Kapish?

i have been using the Sciphone Dream G2+ ,….its a great phone for the price only that the touchscreen is of the resistive type ie u have to use a stylus while composing yr sms. however the WiFi works that is good enough for me.and even the camera is decent..comparable to a Sony Ericsson w810i’s 2MP camera (mind u the dream g2+ has 4M but interpolated camera). how ever the video playback is jus about average but definately way much much much better than on the i68’s.
The sound playback is good and mine even supports thumbnail support while playing songs in the mediaplayer.

How did you get your wifi to work? I got one a week ago and I’m not happy with this phone at all. It’s a good phone for talking and text, but I have not been able to do anything else with this phone. If anyone can tell me how to make these features work, you will be a great help to me.
