iPhone 3.0-compatible FLO TV accessory in the works by Qualcomm

Apart from making cut/paste and tethering a reality on the iPhone, the other notable feature in iPhone firmware 3.0 is that it will allow developers to create 3rd party accessories for use on the iPhone. We’ve seen some concept iPhone gaming accessories in the past such as the iControlPad, and now, Qualcomm has voiced their interest in taking advantage of this new feature in iPhone OS 3.0 by coming out with an iPhone 3.0-compatible antenna/chip accessory for use with their FLO TV (formerly known as MediaFLO) service.

This is in line with their plans to offer mobile broadcast to phones via add-on accessories which will also be available for Windows Mobile devices albeit using a different set of accessories. No definite time frame was given as to when the service and these accessories will roll out, but analysts peg early next year as a safe estimate. With most mobile broadcast services such as Mobile TV having to be built-into the hardware, this accessory solution which will enable almost any device to receive mobile broadcasts might just be what the industry needs to take mobile broadcast media to the next level.
