One of the most popular iPhone clones has big dreams about their Android-clone-running phone. SciPhone has just added WiFi to the G2 now calling it SciPhone Dream G2+. Wow, this is a big boost for SciPhone and its piece of the ever widening iPhone clone market (no stats here just speculation).
The Dream G2+ seems very well-featured for a $185 phone. Almost too good to be true:
- triband GSM, GPRS,WAP, EDGE, WiFi
- Android OS (we’re pretty stoked this could be real Google Android this time)
- 2.8-inch touchscreen QVGA screen
- PDA functionality (MS Office support)
- Bluetooth
- video and music file support
- games

Right now sciphone and hiphone are our most consistently searched for keywords. With good reason, we think.

[...] Months later we’re still thrilled at the discovery that the original Dream G2 doesn’t run the free and open Android OS, but instead a carefully built, stylus-driven clone. Well, SciPhone’s Dream G2+ followup continues in that noble tradition, running with some tweaked looks and the addition of WiFi on top of what looks to be that same Android-cloning interface. It’s pretty thrilling stuff, and not at all bad for the $185 asking price. [Via PMP Today] [...]

The Dream G2 with wifi is still a Dream G2 it just has wifi this time around. In other words it’s not going to run Android instead it just has a cloned interface which given the hardware is likely too weak for Android anyway (at best it has a 208mhz ARM9 mhz which barely meets the minimum recommended for Android) is probably a good thing.
However Sciphone have an N12 listed that may really run Android.

BTW, I expect Chinese phones will be using styluses for a long time yet. Why? Well firstly the stylus has nothing to do with what OS is used but what kind of touch screen is used. Resistive touch screens are still cheaper then capacative ones I believe. Secondly most Chinese phones are designed with the domestic market as the primary goal. If any consideration is given to the export market it would be more to the developing world (as that’s primary export market). Chinese input or for that matter input with any complex script without an alphabet (e.g. Hindi, Urdu) is likely better using handwriting. Even if a keyboard is used, more keys may be ideal meaning input using fingers is likely to be more difficult.

This is a top phone and the quality is excellent. People rubbish China, but many of the world’s great phone makers are using them simply because their R&D and manufacturing processes are right up there.
