G1 Android phone users have been waiting for the longest time on when the Android 1.5, or better known as the Android cupcake update, will be released, but thankfully, T-Mobile in Germany has finally spilled the beans on its availability as they have posted this teaser page up on their website. Mentioning the inclusion of an on-screen keyboard, Bluetooth A2DP support, and video recording/playback, this is definitely the Android cupcake update everybody’s been waiting for and, according to the info provided, will be released in May. T-Mobile USA hasn’t posted any similar info yet on their website, but it’s safe to assume that they shouldn’t lag that far behind when their German counterparts release Android 1.5 to the public. So, if you’re still petrified of trying out the unofficial Android 1.5 update, then you need not wait any longer to get your hands on the official release as its expected to debut next month.

I am seriously dissappointed. I mean they have been talking about dropping cupcake since december 2008. First we expected it in January then February then March and we were almost sure it would be here this month, now they’re saying MAY?? This is ridiculous tmobile COME ON and of all things they have the nerve to post these cupcake flyers in germany and australia and they haven’t even confirmed it here in tha US where the G1 is most popular! I think tmobile is fulla it I thinkt heyre gonna hold out another month or 2 and then start charging money for it or maybe keep it exclusive to their new phones.

Um, if you have read ANY of the articles, T-Mobile has NEVER said when it would be out. You have seen rumors from everyone BUT T-Mobile. The first time I saw T-Mobile mention it was saying Germany MAY have it in April. The cupcake rumors have been generated by the mere fact that its developers have been working on it. And the developers have even said that it is not ready, so don’t yell at T-Mobile, they are simply making sure it is not out BEFORE it is actually usable.

Oh please, tmobiles cupcake is very usable. The xda hack version runs with barely any bugs and no matter how tight your programming is you’re always gonna have SOME bugs so as far as I’m concerned its perfectly releasable and tmobile/google both know it. They are probably just stalling because they’re not sure if they’re willing to give away something like this for free. I have been patiently waiting on this for a long time and I could run out and hack my phone like all tha others but I really wanted to wait for tha official version to drop as a favor to myself and tmobile but they’re takin too long and they have had tmobile sources confirming an april release since january! It wasn’t until april arrived that another tmobile official retracted this statement so not even tmobile themselves know what they’re doing with cupcake…

I don’t get all this crying about the cupcake branch … I don’t want it if it aint ready. My G1 works great for now. I’ll continue to wait patiently for my update.

Jesus freaking christ how stupid can you be? The whole point of Android is that its open source, therefore the cupcake update will be free. Also if you can’t wait until its out and you think its ready, why not use one of the unofficial firmwares? Don’t just complain because someone somewhere said you can have it in April and you believed them, there are always delays with these kind of things.

Omega everyone is just as anxious as you are to get there hands on this upadate. True it will open more features on the phone, ones that will add to its functionality. But I like others want to make sure it works. Whats the point of releasing something thats not going to work or need tons of updates. Tmobile never declared a release date for the update anyway, that was job of every other website in rumorville and other over anxious individuals. If Tmobile says next month then, lets see what they give us. And keep in mind this was a flyery in Germany, so it may not even be official here. European has different sets of regulations when it comes to releasing equipment and software, and a much more advance communications system. Let them test it out over there and then we can get a bug free update. I will wait a few more weeks and keep downloading and developing more applications.

Makes sense… I’m jus anxious cuz I’m tired of hearin ppl blabber abt how the iphone is still tha king and all that crap cuz I believe tha g1 is as or more capable and its these kinda updates that will bury these ridiculous comparisons and put tha g1 on its own throne

t-mobile still doesn’t have 3G in oklahoma, so i’m not suprised one bit.

Come on tmobile get it together…I can’t believe how long I’ve been waiting for this update. This is ridiculous.

I don’t think the comm. Infrastructure is all that advanced in Europe. Remember, they have 4g in europe already BUT, Europe’s market can’t compare to the U.S. in terms of market size. Europe is a ‘test bed’ if you will. There are numerous comm. Technologies that have been tested in Europe and failed without the average consumer knowing about it. Having a failing product in the states could be a name tarnishing financial disaster to a company trying to topple the giant apple iphone. The polished product will be well worth the wait. Have patience!

[...] Android 1.5 Cupcake has barely rolled out, and here we are getting a preview of the next major update for the Android system dubbed as Donut aka Android 2.0. It was featured in the first Google I/O keynote event. Some of its more notable features include a universal search function which allows you to search both online and all local content on your device including apps, language translator, text-to-speech API, and handwriting gestures. Handwriting gestures shouldn’t be confused with handwriting recognition as the latter provides transcription of handwriting while the former is a bit simpler. The example given was when you draw the letter ‘e’ on the screen you’ll be directed to the appropriate section in the song list. There hasn’t been much change in the user-interface, but be that as it may, we’re not completely shutting the doors on any possible changes happening in the future. Likewise, we’re pretty sure there will be more revelations regarding this new Google Android software in the coming months. For now, you can enjoy these shots from the I/O event. [...]
