Like most Sony PSP fans, we’re a bit anxious as to when the next major upgrade to the PSP will come out. While there have been a few upgraded features here and there in the present PSP, I must admit, a new PSP is definitely in order, and based on this latest news, we might see debuting in the upcoming E3 convention happening in Los Angeles a few days from now.

The PSP Go, as it’s called, is a UMD-less version of the Sony’s premiere mobile gaming console. Apart from ditching the UMD media, it might also feature a touchscreen display, sliding mechanism to hide the controls, and be released in two storage capacity variants – 8GB and 16GB. The image above is just an artist’s rendition, but we won’t be surprised if it actually is spot on.
As UMD is now out of the picture, Sony and the new PSP Go will capitalize on the online retail of downloadable content which Apple has proven to be a very viable revenue source with their App Store. Unbound Saga will be one of those games that’ll be available as a download only while Patapon 2 might still continue to be a download voucher for the PSP franchise with more games to follow. We’re still clueless as to its price (console and game), but with E3 just around the corner, we’ll find out soon enough how much it will actually cost.

Hmm, touchscreen display, downloadable games, 8 & 16GB, ultraportable? Sounds a lot like my iPod touch, minus the kick@$$ web browser, accelerometer, cheaper and sometimes even better games, and semipartnership with Google. I’ve had both a PSP and an iPod touch, I know what I’m talking about.

I have owned two iPod Touches over the last year. First an 8GB model and then the 32GB model. I finally sold my current model off as most of the apps are rather worthless, not all, but most. In regards to the games on the Touch…they are limited to gross finger control and tilting the device. Sorry, that does not make a good gaming system. Also, the games on the Touch are almost all old games or new iterations of old games. How many versions of bejewled or tetris does someone need?
Do I have a PSP? Yes, I have 2 PSP 1000 models and a DS Lite. Both systems are much better for games as they are dedicated game machines. Is the PSP a great media player? Great, no. Decent, yes. And as the only system that can act as a widescreen video player, mp3 player WITH A/B repeat, and game machine… it serves me well.
Is the PSP and DS Lite as cool/trendy as the Touch? Probably not, but then again, trendy only takes you so far.

Sorry for the second post, but I just finished an article that I thought was interesting. The new 3GS iPhone (and soon 3GS Touch) will have an updated graphics chip and openGL driver (?). This means that the older phones will not be able to play all the newer games folks keep talking about.
This brings me to another point. If folks want to use this as a game machine, they will need to upgrade and therefore increase the total number of machines sold…not increase the customer base…but just sell more devices to the same people. Heck, I have owned four PSPs total, 2 DS, 2 DS Lite, 2 Gameboys, and 1 Gameboy Micro. This added to the overall sales, but didn’t increase the customer base.
I seriously doubt the Touch/iPhone will become a serious competitor to Nintendo or Sony.
