iPhone 3G S HSDPA speed test on AT&T in Chicago

Apple, Apple iPhone

iphone-3g-vs-3g-s-speed-chicago

One of the more significant improvements in the iPhone 3G S is that it now supports 7.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity. Yeah, that’s quite fast even by today’s standards, but as everyone already knows (or should know), this is still network dependent. It’s either your carrier offers 7.2Mbps connectivity so you can take advantage of this speed or they don’t. It’s as simple as that. In the case of AT&T, they do have it in Chicago. However, putting the new high speed data connectivity of the iPhone 3G S to the test, it was discovered that the hyped improvements weren’t quite there yet. Upload and download speeds were certainly up, but not by much. Needless to say, you can’t take full advantage of the HSDPA connectivity of the iPhone 3G S on AT&T at the moment. So, if you’re one of those AT&T subscribers in Chicago who has been thinking of upgrading their iPhone 3G to the new iPhone 3G S for its 7.2Mbps connectivity, you can rest a little easy now as there’s little difference between the two as far as this feature is concerned.

Wow, this is really great. Yeah, I agree with you, it’s really network dependent.

    Anyway, thanks for sharing.

My ATT tilt phone made by HTC supported HSDPA but didn’t actually connect to it. I had to hack the phone to make it connect to the HSDPA which is 3.5G. You will never know on your ihpnoe 3G whether it is connected to HSDPA until they make the software show an “H” instead of “3G” like on my hacked phone. Unfortunately, I suspect (SUSPECT! but cannot prove) that the iphone 3gs is not necessarily connecting to the HSDPA. My ATT hacked TILT phone is TWICE as fast as my friends IPHONE 3gs while in the same spot. EVERYTIME IT IS…. You iphone 3GS users should rise up and demand that apple and att make the software differentiate between 3G (NO HSDPA) and 3.5G (HSDPA) by having the phone show an “H” instead of 3G. (of course 3G is a more popular term then HSDPA and more marketable)

I agreed with Matt i to have a att tilt with a custom rom and hsdpa active and i loads faster than the 3gs which i have too, yes the 3GS have the support for the speed but is not active we just have to wait until a tweak is available for the 3gs to activate the hsdpa on it . . .

Custom Rom? I used KaiserTweak on my Tilt to access the HSDPA speeds. Got the “H”!
