While we continue to wait for the iPhone Dev Team to come out with their version of an iPhone 3G S jailbreak, Geohot has released his own 3G iPhone S jailbreak called purplera1n.
Running this jailbreak seems simple enough. Connect your iPhone to your computer, click purplera1n, and once your iPhone reboots, run Freeze on bootup. It’s that easy! However, before you proceed, it is important to note that this version only works on Windows and it’s still a beta release. Thus, don’t be surprised to encounter a few bugs along the way.
Nonetheless, if you’ve been aching for a jailbreak tool to hack open your new iPhone 3G S, this is the only one available at the moment. If you manage to build up enough courage to try this one out, do hit us up in the comments section below as we’d love to hear your take on this new purplera1n iPhone 3G S jailbreak.

The jailbreak works great. The only problem is that a lot of the Cydia apps don’t work on the 3Gs yet. Backgrounder, SBsettings, notifier, Qik, and Lock Calendar ALL work GREAT! But others such as winterboard DON’T (yet).

Confirmation winterboard don’t work it installs but puts you on safemode and no matter how many times you restart you in safemode unless you uninstall winterboard

It worked for me. It took a couple of tries. It probably would have been much easier for me if I had not been trying to do it using a vista virtual machine on my mac (I had to restore a couple of times). After I switched to using a pc, I tried it an it did not do it, I unplugged the iPhone, reconnected, ran the program again and success! No problems after that.

I jailbroke my phone 3gs yestarday and I’m on a hp laptop running on vista and I had not 1 problem 1st try went right threw ! It is the fastes and easiest jailbreak to date in my eyes I mean I pressed I think 2 buttons and was done ..It is unbelievable how fast it is ( cydia that is ) I tested out a few apps and here’s wat happen irealquick sms2.0 NOT working , as you already no winterboards a NO go at the moment and sbsettings is working great and FiveColums and fiveiconDOCK is working great but fiveROWS is not working because it installs winterboard !! Also for anybody still using a 3g running 3.0 firmware that thought that fiverows wasn’t working it is well it is only if you uninstall fiveicondock if you uninstall that it will work perfectly .. I think these guys are great that do these things for the people !!! I respect but really don’t get what the devteam was waiting for but there still are MANY issues that need to be worked out on the 3gs and I’m sure one of thes brain-e-acts willfix them as you can see I’m no brain-e-act I can hardly spell … Well thanks GEOHOT and everyone else who made my 4th of July just that much better !!!!!!!

Hi, im a newbie on this jailbreaking thing. I’m still confused/ don’t understand this whole thing. I have a 3G S and I tried that purplera1n program last night, it put my handset into clear/blank and my iTunes was saying I should click “restore”. I panicked! So I clicked restore and now Im back to square one. During that blankness, i didn’t know what to do. Is this the part where i run “Freedom”, cydia, programs, etc. I don’t know waht they are for. Should freedom and cydia be running already right after I click “purplera1n” ? Please, need help in step-by-step instructions. I still have to have those programs (freedom , cydia…still searching where to download them).

Dude just follow the instructions this is a very very easy jailbreak .. Once you click the make it rain button a pic of geohot will appear on your screen after that it will reboot after that there will be an icon name freeze run that once that is completed then go to ur screen if no cydia then reboot device and should appear good luck but if you still can’t do it I suggest going to a payed website for $30-$40 bucks they will walk you threw everything a good one is autoiphoneunlocker.com goodluck !!

I have a Rogers iphone 3gs 16G (v3.0). Managed to unlock the phone with purplera1n and install cydia. Many apps don’t work like Cycorder, winterboard and Video Recorder. I’ve also noticed Fring doesn’t work and I can’t run the App Store and itunes on the device. I guess that is why it is called hacking, never know what to expect.

Works great! As a matter of fact, I’m typing this on my jailbroken 3gs right now! Can confirm that winterboard still doesn’t work, even with the new version. Purplera1n is a lot easier than the quickpwn I used on my 3g (at least it was for me)

Hi guys just wanted to drop a line everyone on many posts have been complaining why did geohut release this buggy jailbreak showing apple what to fix on 3.1 don’t worry it’s not gonna happen I currently live in new Mexico but still have a close friendship with my college buddy (go bruins!) who is now working at apple I won’t say his job but it is not at the genius bar or in a retail store let’s just say he is behind the scenes that being said I talked to him about this situation and he said “it’s funny that people think we don’t know about this we have some of the best engineers in the world that could make this impossible but why would we this brings our phone to more consumers who doesn’t have one of our carriers like AT&T but this isn’t to say I’m gonna push for you to do it but come on if we can sale more units why fix it” that’s a qoute

[...] Purplera1n is progressing quite remarkably as they’ve just released the latest version of this famed iPhone 3G S jailbreak. What’s new in this latest release? Well, Mac users can now also enjoy the benefits of purplera1n, and what’s even more exciting than that is it also now enables you to run Backgrounder on your speedy new iPhone 3G S. Officially, the Windows version now stands at RC2a, but Geohot notes that if you’re already running RC2 installed already, there’s no need to update to RC2a. As usual, proceed with caution if you dare try this out, but based on the initial comments and feedback, it looks to be doing very well so far. Likewise, do hit us up in the comments section below and tell us how it works out for you. [...]
