It’s no secret that, hardware-wise, the iPhone 3G S is far superior to any of its predecessors. It’s got double the RAM, a faster processor, a built-in compass, and video recording capabilities, but did you know it can also do 1080p HD playback? Well, that’s what was this video is proof of.
With the help of an app called FileAid, this iPhone 3G S’ secret ability is suddenly revealed. However, as it was noted in the video, this isn’t a perfect feature just yet for the iPhone 3G S. Playback of high bitrate 720p videos is quite choppy, and when they tried out the Avatar trailer, the audio driver of the phone crashed. A simply rebooting of the iPhone fixed the audio problem, but as you can see, the 1080p playback feature clearly isn’t ready for public use just yet.
Nonetheless, based on what we can tell in this video, it seems that the iPhone 3G S’ hardware is already capable of doing this and only a firmware upgrade is probably what’s needed to unleash its full potential. We could be wrong, though, so let’s just wait and see what Apple has to say about this latest news off the grapevine.
