Expansys: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2

The new Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 is a pretty sweet device, but is it worth £604.99 ($1,010 USD)? That’s what it actually costs according to Expansys who has again lived up to their reputation of listing upcoming devices to their site ahead of everybody else. They’ve also disclosed that they will be getting their XPERIA X2 stock by January 11th, 2010 which is actually not that bad unless, of course, you belong to the select markets who will be getting it this year already. Personally, and I believe many of you will agree with me, $1010 is a bit too steep even for the XPERIA X2. This is not to say that no one will buy it at that price. We’re pretty sure there’s someone crazy and rich enough to do so, but if Sony Ericsson plans to make this their next best-selling device, the price has definitely got to go down.

Just in case Sony’s planning an Xperia X3, here’s some advice. If the Xperia Smartphone series are supposed to be for Business users only, then the current feature set and the price range is great and spot on. However, if Sony wants different types of users to buy this device there are at least two things that must be addressed; (1) larger screen size. Even if the resolution remains the same WVGA a physically larger screen is required for a smartphone that has wifi, a touchscreen, runs WinMo 6.1 or better, and has a WVGA resolution screen; it just makes sense. (2) Lower prices. For a devices of this caliber to sell well it’s price must not exceed the $650-$799 range; of course lower is better.
The iPhone can pull of it’s $900+ (unlocked) price because it’s “famous” and also because of it’s design. If Sony can get AT$T to carry it’s devices for a carrier-subsidized price of $199/$299 then they too can sell it unlocked for $900+. That’s just how it works nowadays.
You can tell by the way people were all over the Xperia X1 because it was so feature-packed. But it was just too expensive and most people would rather buy the HTC Touch HD even though the Xperia X1 supported all the Major global HSPA bands and you were sure it’s 3G features would be available no matter where you were on the globe. Why? Because the HTC Touch HD has a bigger screen; same resolution but physically larger.

    Just a thought

Note that if you’re converting to US dollars, you’re probably also not going to be paying VAT. In which case, expansys price is 526.06 pounds, which is approximately US$878.35

Not as bad, but still high.

Most problematic about this device is that it appears to have the same hardware/chipset as the X1 - a pathetic Qualcomm 524mhz chip.
