You can use pinch to zoom on the Motorola Milestone (the European version of the Droid) but not on the Droid itself that Verizon will be offering. We have no idea why the Europeans get a multitouch Motorola but the Americans cannot as Android 2.0 software already supports multitouch. Engadget tells us some people suspect Apple might have been the culprit (did they promise the iPhone to Verizon? Did Apple ask Google?) Engadget says the have the official O2 Motorola Milestone specs list. We’ll be waiting till that leak becomes an official post. But think on this: there are iPhone jailbreaks; now will there be Droid jailbreaks?

There is no possible reason to jailbreak the Droid- it’s open source software! Good luck surviving the Linux community with ignorant comments like those.

I think this one may be pretty easy.
EU don’t support software patents, this kind of thing may be patented in the US but not in the EU, so that may be the reason why we get it and they don’t.
I don’t know if this hold with a global/american company though. Guess it may.
Chris: Just because the software is open don’t mean that the phone is, DRM is impossible, signed firmware is impossible, trying to lock down the software on the phone is impossible and so on. Or well, depending on license that is. With LGPL it would be totally possible to include some proprietarian/closed parts to which interacts with the open parts.

Ugggh, don’t say jailbreak. You sound like a 14 year old. There’s cyanogenmod. Although, only for HTC phones as of now, so the Droid “jailbreak” haha…. may take some time.

Software patents are granted in EU - the interpretation of the exclusion in EPC is interpreted very optimistic by patent offices. It is not seen as software as such. Most patents in the US can be granted in the EU. The main difference is that the US market runs more litigations.
For a full update on the problem, read the latest on groklaw for US patent praxis.

My guess is that Droid is missing multi touch because of Verizon. Verizon launched iDont campaign against iPhone but in their official statement they have mentioned that they are doin everything for iPhone to come to them, so my guess is , they are leaving a window open for iPhone.
