We’ve heard that Motorola managed to ship 100K Droid phones on its first weekend, but where does it really stand in the over-all picture? Well, these figures by Clicky, a web analytics service, may help us out.

Taken last November 11th, the Motorola Droid accounts for 1.49% mobile internet traffic in the US. That may seem small, but that’s actually 25% of total Android traffic in the country which is quite remarkable considering that it has only been available for barely a week. The iPhone still stands tall as its responsible for 52.09% web traffic in the US and further improves outside the country with 63.21% share. The Motorola Droid is still 0% outside the US, but this will soon change as the Motorola Milestone is expected to debut both in Europe and Canada in the coming months.
The Droid is truly shaping up to be quite a winner for Motorola. Hopefully though, it won’t be a one-hit wonder.

Headline: Droid sold only 9% as many units as the iphone did during its initial weekend.
I looked at the Motorola Droid at 2 Best Buy stores on the launch day.
It was just lumped in with countless other phones on the counter.
No big announcement. No big fanfare. No line. No one saying anything about it.
Wow. This was The Big Launch???? Nothing.
I wonder why????

What a totally misleading and confusing headline. You give Droid 25% and iPhone 52% in the same headline. If you are going to put both percentages in the same headline you need to use Droid’s 1.5% or leave iPhone’s percentage out of it entirely.

The Droid does support multitouch in third party apps, but they did not incorerate it in to the web browser out of fear of a lawsuit from apple.

[...] There are many bloggers and commentators who are calling the Droid the best thing since the bread. The Droid is a great phone and certainly capable of holding its own against the iPhone, but it has ways to go to catch the iPhone in terms of web traffic and market share. Apple has built a huge foundation for the future with the App store. And the majority of web traffic comes from iPhone users. Android is growing its market-share in that regard, but by no means it’s anywhere near what the iPhone is right now. [...]

Translation: a phone that has been around for two years has much better penetration than one which has been around for about one week.
Do you know why there was no big fanfare, no crazy launch with people overflowing everywhere? Because they don’t need one. It will sell itself, and slowly Android in general will begin to dominate. What if, just like with x86 processors, Apple eventually went with Android in the iPhone?
