Verizon’s OTA Android 2.0.1 firmware update for the Motorola Droid isn’t available to everyone just yet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t install one manually right now on your Motorola Android touchscreen QWERTY slider.

Want to know how? It’s actually pretty simple. Just download the file here, rename it to update.zip and store it in the root directory of the microSD. Turn off your Motorola Droid. When turning it on again, hold down the X key on the keypad to enter the recovery mode. When you see the triangle with an exclamation point appear on the screen, press the volume up key and hold down the camera button half way down at the same time. After this, head on over to “apply update.zip” and press the gold center button to select it. This will start the update process. Once it’s done, simply reboot and that’s it! You can now enjoy Android 2.0.1 goodness on your Motorola Droid.
Just be sure to back things up in case something goes wrong along the way. However, based on the experience of majority of the folks who’ve tried this out, there shouldn’t be much of a problem installing this new firmware update manually.

This is GREAT. Thank you! When I went to home–>Settings–>About Phone–>
System Updates to check for system updates, the phone told me that I was
already up to date. But the Firmware version was listed as 2.0. Then I tried
this manual update and now the Firmware version is listed as 2.0.1 and
Build Number has been updated to ESD56

If you happen to have not gotten the update yet automatically that isn’t to say there is something wrong, it’s just happening randomly and all the phones will get them on their own. (even if you check for updates and it tells you it is up to date, that simply means it hasn’t been applied for you to recieve yet.)
Yet ofcourse you may manually install, which is just fine.
Just posting on behalf of those who may not understand why they haven’t gotten the update automatically yet.

I love love my motorola droid. I got mine using the service at http://www.amzpricesniper.com. It watched the Amazon inventory and the moment Amazon received fresh inventory at the regular retail price this obnoxious alarm went off.

Hey mine was waiting on me today, does anyone know what kind of things it updates?, like big stuff that’s noticable

It changes the locked screen’s setup that’s all I’ve found different so far
December 11th, 2009 at 7:18 am
One change I’ve seen is to the widgets. The appearances of some of them have changed, such as the power control and music player widgets. I’m sure, though, if you google the update for a list of changes it will give you what you want. BTW, mine was waiting for me as well, supporting the idea of a random update push.

Biggest fix so far. Opening a pdf directly from an email.
Anybody find anymore changes?

I heard this was supposed to fix bluetooth connection issues. My Bluetooth still will not turn on. I just click connect, and it says, Connecting to bluetooth, then stops and never actually connects. Anyone else have this?

When I updated to the 2.0.1 firmware upgrade, I lost a majority of my contacts. I have 137 contacts and after the reboot, I have 33. I’ve played with the sync’ing of email & facebook, but it hasnt’ fixed my problem. I’ve also tried the import/export option and it goes through my contacts, but once it completes, it just shows the 33 contacts (even though it goes through my 137 contacts) any help/guidance on how I can get my contact list fixed?
Thanks.
