After a whole month of being available in China through China Unicom, the iPhone has already sold 100,000 units in the largest market in the entire world. This is after Unicom disclosed that they managed to sell 5,000 iPhones on opening weekend. Not bad, eh? However, if you take a look at the bigger picture, it’s actually not that impressive. China Unicom roughly has 140 million customers in the country, and 100,000 is just 0.07% of their subscriber base. It becomes even more insignificant when you factor in that an estimated 1 million iPhone units were actually sold in China before it officially launched in the country. Why such the big discrepancy? Well, aside from being cheaper, the grey market iPhone units in China come with all of its features intact while the ones sold by China Unicom don’t come with WiFi. Anyway, the availability of the iPhone in China through a local carrier will boost iPhone sales across the globe and will certainly help Apple climb up the standings in the mobile phone industry.
