OK, when we begun our iPhone killer drive two years ago, we were largely disappointed not at the quality of the competition–the latest iPhone killer being the Droid–but at how toothless these phones were against the Apple juggernaut. Oh, they all looked cool–the N95, the Samsung Instinct, the Palm Pre–but that didn’t do much in stopping the iPhone selling in the tens of millions, and we are only talking about the one model here, outpacing all the other smartphones in the market.
So maybe hardware and specs like 5 MP cameras with video-recording and GPS doesn’t cut it anymore after post game-changer. What about the operating system, then? Tech critics have often pointed out that the iPhone may not exactly lead the pack in terms of features but when it comes to its user interface, nothing is as user-friendly. Which brings us to today’s couple of announcements.
First, Google leaked the Nexus One. Sleek touchscreen smartphone but oh-so-typical looks. iPhone killer? Doesn’t look like one, but then Google dropped (or rather, let drop?) this bit of information: it will run on Android 2.1. In itself, this is exciting news. A new Android OS that Google will serve up to the public using its own brand of handset. But hours later, we have this leak of an iPhone OS 4.0. What’s interesting is that the real news is the iPhone 3.1.3 software update, but for some reason, the leakage also mentions the iPhone 4.0 software (jailbreak panic again?), which should hit us as more evidence that 4G iPhone is imminent, and yet though iPhone 4G is foremost in our minds we can’t help but think that style and features will not be the focal point in the mobile world next year. It’s all going to be about the operating system… specifically, it will be Android vs Mobile Mac OS X.

Companies just don’t get it. You can’t just keep trying to *COPY* the iphone… you have to think years *AHEAD* of the iphone.
Companies just don’t have to insight to think that far ahead. (or even months ahead)
Companies have slept for the past several years… and will just spend the next several years trying to play “catch up” to the iphone.
I would LOVE to sell my iphone and get something twice as good. Nothing even comes close.

Frankly, I think it’s AT&T vs. Verizon. Both operating systems are killer and the Android is amazing, but if I had to use AT&T it wouldn’t matter how awesome the phone was, I wouldn’t own it.
