Mozilla is betting that the mobile version of their web browser Firefox will be popular and usable enough to make mobile applications like the ones you get from the iTunes App Store unnecessary. Fennec, the mobile version of firefox, will first come out through the Nokia N900. It will have the fastest Javascript engine of any mobile device. The killer characteristic of Fennec is that it will help unload some of difficulty of making a mobile application like creating support for several operating systems. Small developers are especially troubled by cross-platform support.
“We look at the problems it creates for small innovators,” said Jay Sullivan, vice president of mobile at Mozilla. “You have to create an iPhone app, an Android app, a Windows Mobile app…”
There is also a chance your application will get rejected. Fennec will have the Add-Ons (Fennec will get new add-ons not found on Firefox), Awesome Bar, and a synchronization feature (Mozilla Weave Sync) with Mozilla on your PC or Mac.
“When you start typing, the website you went to on the desktop a week ago will just pop up,” Sullivan said. “We will sync browser tabs in real time. If you have five, 10, 20 tabs open on your PC and something happens and you have to leave, you can pick up where you left off on your phone.”
