Microsoft has just officially unveiled the new Phone Marketplace that will complement and probably make or break their recently announced Windows Phone 7 platform.
Apart from the aesthetic changes that’s now streamlined with the new look of the OS, they’ve finally some change to make it more competitive with the Apple App Store and Google’s Android Market. Windows Phone Marketplace now supports credit card purchases, operator billing, and ad-supported content as well as a try-before-you-buy scheme. Purchased apps can be pinned to the Quick Launch screen making it easier to access. It’s also confirmed that the new Windows Phone Marketplace will be the official exclusive distributor of apps for Windows Phone 7. However, enterprise customers will be allowed to directly deploy apps to employees bypassing the Marketplace interface.
It looks like they’ve done a pretty good job in overhauling the whole system to make it more relevant and up-to-date with today’s standards. The question now is, how many apps will the Windows Phone Marketplace have once the first batch of Windows Phone 7-based devices begins to roll out later this year?

Windows Phone 7 Series is like a walled garden, where Microsoft can say what apps can be on it. I don’t think people will be happy with this closed environment.

I am not sure I like this idea but i guess it is better than searching on the internet to find apps for winmo. I just worry about places like Xda that have improved the winmo experience. It seems they are cutting out most of the current fan base. But lets hope not.

It looks like Microsoft did a great job in Windows Phone 7. But based on it’s previous track records, I just don’t think they have what it takes for the mobile industry. Just let this one go Microsoft…focus on what you guys are good at.
